Andrey P. Babenko, M.D., Ph.D.

Andrey P. Babenko, M.D., Ph.D. completed both his medical and research doctorates at the Kirov (formerly Imperial) Medical Academy in St. Petersburg (formerly Sankt-Petersburg). Before joining the Institute as a Principal Scientist, he was a tenured Senior Scientist and Head of Research Group at the Pavlov Medical University and Pavlov Institute of Physiology. Dr. Babenko has served as a Visiting Investigator at the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM) and as an Assistant Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Baylor College of Medicine. In Seattle, Dr. Babenko has been a Scientist at Pacific Northwest Diabetes Research Institute (formally, Pacific Northwest Research Institute, PNRI) and an Affiliate Associate Professor of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics at the Diabetes Endocrinology Research Center, University of Washington.

Dr. Babenko has received many fellowships and awards including a fellowship from Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF), and a national American Heart Association Career Development Award. He has obtained funding for his research from Russian Foundation for Fundamental Investigations, French Ministry of Research and Higher Education, INSERM, Foundation for Medical Research, American Heart Association, JDRF, and National Institutes of Health (NIH).

He published more than thirty papers in highly respected scientific journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation Research, Diabetes, Journal of Biological Chemistry, and many others. He presented his work at numerous International meetings, including many most selective Gordon Research Conferences. Dr. Babenko served as the Scientific Secretary of the Problem Commission on General Physiology, Russian Academy of Sciences, and as Captain of Military Medical Service. He is reviewing ad hoc for NIH, National Science Foundation, and other governmental and private funding agencies. He is a member of Biophysical Society and several other professional scientific organizations.
